How skip permits work & how to apply for one

When hiring a skip, there are a few things you may need to think about, such as a Permit. A skip permit is required when you place a skip on a public road, street, or on any other land which is owned by the council. This permit gives you special permissions to be able place a skip wherever you require, when it’s not on private land. If you place a skip on private land such as your driveway or garden, you won’t be required to obtain a permit.

A permit is required to ensure the skip is placed in a safe, suitable place which is not obstructing traffic. When placing a skip on a public road, you will need to inform your local council so they can assess the safety to ensure it doesn’t cause any danger.

If you hire a skip and require a permit, the skip hiring company will usually inform you and arrange for this to be applied for on your behalf. A skip permit is usually valid for between 1 to 4 weeks, depending on your council. You may also have the option to apply for a renewal of the permit; however, this will come with an additional fee.

In some cases, you may be able to apply for a skip permit yourself. All you need to do is fill out an application form on your local council’s website and pay the fee. Once the skip permit has been granted, you can continue with your project by ensuring everyone keeps safe.
